a poem where sweetness yields to spite and the burn comes home to roost

It comes in twos, the heat, the sting,
A golden shot, a bitter wing.
You raise the glass, you clench the jaw,
You greet the beast without a flaw.

The Jack goes first, all honeyed fire,
A reckless dare in roadside wire.
Then lemon snaps, a citrus crack,
Like logic breaking at the back.

No chaser dressed in sugared veils,
No garnish here, no courtly tales.
Just sweet, then sour burn, then bite,
A punchline carved in morning light.

You drank. You flinched. You laughed. You swore.
And somehow found you craved one more.
For in this sharp, two-step attack,
The pain’s in front, the truth’s in back.
